The United States has launched the first generic, Seroquel 300, on Thursday, which will get US sales of $6.1 billion from Novartis, the health care firm that will manufacture the generic.
The generic will have the same strength as the original medication, but will cost only $5.35. It will be available by mail for the first time in April, and could be launched in April.
Sales of the generic, which will cost $6.1 billion, will total $6.8 billion by the end of the year. That's up from the $6.6 billion the company has been selling since October.
In addition to the company, the firm also has a research and development firm to work on a drug for depression called Quetiapine. The firm's research and development firm is based in the United Kingdom.
But the generic has not yet gone off patent, the firm says, and has to make the first generic copies. The company says it can only afford $10 million of the $5.35 price.
Seroquel will be available by mail for $10 in April and will be launched by Novartis in the fall. The company has said the generic will be available by mail next year.
But a spokeswoman for Seroquel said: "We are very disappointed with the letter and the practice of selling generic medicines in the U. S., where we can only afford the $10 million price.
